How to check if a thermostat is working

Time to turn the heat back on. You approach your good old thermostat, or the new model you just installed, press the power button and... surprise, nothing happens at all.   The expected metallic click of the relay does not arrive , the frost rages outside, you feel the anger building towards that thing that seems to be looking at you mockingly from the wall. Wait, it might not be his fault.

Let's find out together how to check it .

How to check if a thermostat is working

The  thermostat , but also the  chronothermostat , can in fact be seen as an advanced switch. We must therefore create the conditions for this switch to "trip"  closing the circuit .

So here's how to proceed with  check if the thermostat is working properly .

Suppose we have 20 degrees at home. We turn on the thermostat, go into manual mode and set the comfort temperature to more than 20 degrees, for example to 24. If we hear the  classic metallic click , and the  boiler turns on , it means that  the thermostat works , otherwise there are two options:

  • The thermostat is set to cooling mode . It means he's doing the opposite. Let's try to set the comfort temperature below 20 degrees. Does the relay trip? Then the hypothesis is correct. The solution is to set the thermostat to heating mode.
  • We heard the click, but the boiler did not turn on . It could be a problem with the boiler or with the thermostat connection. Let's take a closer look at these two cases.

The thermostat is connected badly

This hypothesis is obviously in  scenario of a new installation , because an old thermostat, which has always worked, clearly cannot be badly connected.

So, we have just installed the thermostat, we test its operation, we hear the click, but the boiler doesn't start. There is a good chance that we have connected some wires incorrectly, the solution is to take a good look at the  connection diagrams , usually supplied with the thermostat, and  check that you have connected everything correctly .

The thermostat is connected correctly

If we are sure that the thermostat is connected correctly and we heard the click, then  it could be a problem with the boiler . Is there a way to check? Yes, you can do it too, but it's more  it is prudent to rely on a technician .

Do you remember? At the beginning we said that the thermostat is a switch, so you just need to manually connect the  boiler consent cables  to check whether the latter part.

If it turns on then the thermostat needs to be replaced, vice versa the problem is in the boiler.
